Insect pests are a significant threat to crop production, causing two main types of damage. The first is direct injury inflicted by the feeding insect, which may consume leaves, or burrow into stems, fruits, or roots. Hundreds of insect species are responsible for this, including larvae and adults from groups such as orthopterans, homopterans, heteropterans, coleopterans, lepidopterans, and dipterans. The second type is indirect damage, where the insect acts as a vector, transmitting bacterial, viral, or fungal infections to crops. Insecticides are categorized by their chemical composition, toxicological action, or mode of penetration, the latter distinguishing them based on whether their effect is through ingestion (stomach poisons), inhalation (fumigants), or contact with the insect’s body (contact poisons). Most synthetic insecticides act through all three pathways and are characterized by their chemical structure. Additionally, certain organic compounds found naturally in plants and some inorganic substances are utilized as insecticides and may be approved for use in organic farming.
